About FIM Speedway GP2 racing series
The FIM Speedway GP2 series, also known as the FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship, is a prestigious racing competition that showcases the top under-21 speedway riders from around the world. This series serves as a critical stepping stone for young talents aspiring to compete at the highest level in the sport, specifically in the FIM Speedway Grand Prix (SGP).
The championship consists of three rounds held in different locations throughout Europe. In 2024, these events take place in Malilla, Sweden; Riga, Latvia; and Torun, Poland. Each round features 16 riders who compete in a series of heats to accumulate points. The format mirrors that of the SGP, with each event comprising 23 heats followed by semi-finals and finals. In each heat, four riders race for four laps. Points are awarded based on finishing positions: three points for first place, two for second, one for third, and none for fourth or if disqualified. After all heats are completed, the top eight riders advance to the semi-finals. The two best performers from each semi-final compete in the final heat to determine the event winner.
The Speedway GP2 series is crucial for young riders aiming to transition into professional ranks within speedway racing. Many former Speedway GP2 competitors have successfully moved up to become champions in higher-tier competitions such as the SGP
Riders qualify for the Speedway GP2 series through various means, including performance in national championships and other qualifying events across Europe. The top four from each qualifying round progress to the finals alongside wild card entries selected by the SGP Commission. Speedway bikes used in this series are unique as they do not have brakes; instead, riders control their speed through power sliding techniques. These bikes are equipped with 500cc engines running on pure methanol fuel, which allows them to accelerate rapidly off the start line.
